About the Journal

The East African Journal of Sociological Thought and Research is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal committed to advancing critical and empirical scholarship in sociology and the social sciences. Rooted in the intellectual traditions of Eastern Africa, the journal provides a platform for original research, theoretical development, and interdisciplinary dialogue on social change, identity, institutions, conflict, development, and culture.


Focus and Scope

The journal publishes scholarly articles, research notes, reviews, and theoretical reflections on:

  • Classical and contemporary sociological theory

  • Social structures and institutions

  • Gender, youth, and generational dynamics

  • Ethnicity, identity, and nationalism

  • Urbanization, migration, and displacement

  • Social policy, inequality, and development

  • Conflict, peacebuilding, and social justice

  • Religion, culture, and modernity in East Africa

  • Sociology of knowledge, media, and technology

The journal welcomes contributions from scholars based in East Africa and across the Global South, as well as comparative studies that provide sociological insight into African realities.


Open Access and Licensing

This journal operates under a Gold Open Access model. All articles are immediately and permanently available online free of charge to readers, with no access restrictions.

License: Content is published under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) license. This permits use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited, and the use is non-commercial.


Article Processing Charges (APCs)

To sustain open access publishing and cover operational costs, the journal charges a modest Article Processing Charge (APC) after a manuscript has successfully passed peer review and been accepted for publication.

Waivers or discounts may be granted to early-career scholars, independent researchers, or those from low-resource institutions, upon formal request and editorial board approval.


Copyright and Author Rights

Authors retain full copyright of their work. By submitting and publishing with this journal, authors grant the journal the right to distribute and display the article under the agreed Creative Commons license.


Archiving and Digital Preservation

The East African Journal of Sociological Thought and Research ensures the long-term preservation of published content through inclusion in the LOCKSS and CLOCKSS archival systems. Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are assigned to all published articles.

All personal data provided by authors, reviewers, and readers such as names, institutional affiliations, and email addresses will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of the journal and will not be made available to any third party.

Journal History

Established in 2025, the East African Journal of Sociological Thought and Research was founded to revitalize critical sociological scholarship in the region and globally. It seeks to bridge theoretical inquiry with lived experiences, policy challenges, and intellectual decolonization in the African context.
