Abstract

This study examines the sociodemographic characteristics of rape offenders and victims using judicial and forensic data from Kenya. Findings indicate that most offenders are young adult males, while victims are predominantly adolescent females. The results further show that sexual violence frequently occurs within familiar relationships rather than through random attacks, highlighting the social complexity of these crimes. Urban areas record higher reporting rates, although rural cases remain underreported due to stigma and access barriers. The study confirms that age and gender are critical determinants of both offending and victimisation patterns. It concludes that comprehensive interventions combining legal reform, community sensitisation, and youth-focused prevention are necessary to curb the growing prevalence of sexual violence. The research adds valuable empirical evidence for policymakers and practitioners working in justice and public health sectors.
