When considering how long it takes to publish a journal article, my advice to researchers is not to focus entirely on the time between submission and publication, but rather on the quality and transparency of the editorial process.
Publication timelines naturally vary depending on the complexity of the manuscript, the availability of qualified reviewers, the nature of the reviewers' recommendations, and the extent of revisions required.
I would encourage authors to pay particular attention to how a journal conducts its peer review. A credible scholarly journal should have a clearly defined editorial screening process, engage independent reviewers with relevant subject expertise, and evaluate manuscripts based on originality, methodological rigour, ethical compliance, scholarly contribution, and relevance to its scope.
Where revisions are requested, authors should receive constructive feedback and be given a reasonable opportunity to address the concerns raised. Depending on the nature of those revisions, a manuscript may require further assessment before a final editorial decision is reached.
It is also worth noting that peer-review quality should not be judged solely by the length of the publication timeline. A lengthy process does not necessarily guarantee rigorous evaluation, just as an efficient editorial process does not automatically indicate inadequate peer review.
My advice to researchers is to prioritise journals that demonstrate editorial independence, qualified and impartial reviewers, transparent publication policies, and a genuine commitment to research integrity.
For most journals published under the HRL Journal Services umbrella, authors should generally plan for approximately 2–6 months from manuscript submission to publication, depending on the factors discussed above. This is an indicative planning period rather than a guaranteed timeline, as manuscripts requiring extensive revisions or additional rounds of peer review may take longer.
We therefore encourage prospective authors to submit their manuscripts well in advance of anticipated academic, institutional, funding, graduation, promotion, or other professional deadlines. Early submission provides sufficient time for independent peer review, constructive revisions, and thorough editorial assessment without placing unnecessary pressure on the scholarly evaluation process.
Ultimately, the credibility of peer review lies in the quality of the assessment, the independence of reviewers, and the integrity of editorial decisions not simply the number of days between submission and acceptance.
